As I type Ashley is receiving her third plasmapheresis treatment this morning. Each of the two previous treatments have gone smoothly. They take less than one hour to complete. There will be four more treatments by Wednesday the 28th. Ashley will stay at least one more day at Northwestern Hospital for observation. It is then our hope to readmit Ashley to Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC).
Ashley’s room looks out on the Gaither building which is part of the hospital complex. But not to worry; just outside her room is a window that provides Ashley with a view of Michigan Ave at Erie St. She can watch the shoppers and see some of the lights put up during the festival of lights event last Friday.
We have been pleasantly surprised by the active physical therapy department here at the hospital. One of our biggest concerns was that for two weeks Ashley would not get physical therapy outside of what we could do in the room (basically range of motion). Not only did both physical and occupational therapists show up the first day, but they have an excellent therapy gym. Best of all Ashley has scheduled therapy times. In fact she was scheduled to go this morning, but the treatment was moved up and we had to cancel. I just received a call from the therapist saying they have her rescheduled for this afternoon. Fantastic!
One of the other differences between RIC and the hospital is wheelchairs. At RIC they measured Ashley and provided a custom set of wheels. It’s a bit different here. It’s kind of on a first come, first served basis. The model we got our hands on is interesting. It is wide enough to hold a pro football offensive lineman. The footrests on the other hand are more accommodating for a person under five feet in height. So we put pillows on Ashley’s sides to make her more comfortable. Another difference is no seatbelt, nor headrest. Mary rigged up both with sheets. The headrest is possible to put together because the chair has a high looping bar (like you see on an airport wheelchair, and makes me think of the sissy bars that were popular on bicycles when I was a kid). I don’t think we will be posting a picture of Ashley in the chair; not too flattering, but I think I have given you enough info to draw a mental picture.
While our hopes were for faster progress; this thanksgiving we will be thankful that we have Ashley, that we have been able to have her treated in some of the finest medical facilities in the country and for the comfort that has come from the prayers and support provided by all of you. Family, friends and faith. I can’t fathom anyone going through an ordeal like this without them. We are truly blessed in all three categories.
We wish you all a heartfelt and warm thanksgiving.

Ashley -
Happy Thanksgiving! I'm so thankful things are going well for you. The story about the wheelchair made me giggle. I pray for your recovery.

Dear Ashley,
Hi sweetie. I was thinking about the beautiful lights and displays on Michigan Avenue and hoping it will be warm enough for you to get out and see them. We're heading to Ft. Wayne to Robins's house for Thanksgiving and then I think we'll stay at your house to do some electrical work in your new room. I'll see you on Tuesday, but all of us will try to get up to see you this Holiday weekend, probably Saturday or Sunday. We love you, Aunt Lynn, Uncle Stan, and Angela
Dear Harrington family, As we look forward to Thanksgiving, we reflect on our friends and family who have shown us by example, the true meaning of love. Ash--
Hey, cara (just picked that up from Italian class! sidenote: readers, it means "dear")! I was so nervous/worried for you about the physical rehab portion of your recovery while you're getting this treatment. I prayed they would set up a way to keep you active because I know it's good for you and makes you feel good! So, YAY! for that.
I was helping Ma with the yardwork today (we're hosting the family Thanksgiving meal this year! EEK! You know how Ma gets!) and I had a hilarious flashback about something we did in high school and I cannot remember it right now, but believe me, when I do, you'll know it and be laughing too! It was good.
OH! In my Linguistics class, we were watching something about dialects and words that come from different regions, etc. etc. One of the words they came up with on the video was "cady-wampus" (excuse my spelling, please!) and I go "My friend Ashley says that!!!!" and I got really excited. haha
OK, that's my story!
I love you very much, Ashley, and I will be thinking about you all week (not that that's any different from any other week), but I will add on my special Thanksgiving Prayers for you.
Every day, Ash, I pray for you!
XoXo,
Emily
Dear Ashley,
I would like to share a funny Thanksgiving story with you.
I was your age and newly married and this was our first Thanksgiving Dinner together. I was cooking for the two of us.
First of all I bought a 16 pound turkey for the two of us..."crazy" what was I thinking. Maybe I wanted to eat turkey for days and days and days after. "You get my drift"
Secondly you may be able to thaw a pound of hamburger overnight in the refrigerator but it takes days "were back to that days things again" to thaw a turkey.
As I began to prepare Mr. Bird for the oven "he was a cold frozen thing" and I had thought that I had him all cleaned , stuffed and ready to go in the oven. So he did! Only to discover later that I removed only one bag of goodies from his inside. There are two bags of goodies to be removed..be sure and check "both" ends of the bird!
One bottle of wine was sacrificed while Mr. Bird cooked and there was none left for dinner.
The moral to this story is...buy "2" bottles of wine and remove "2" bags of goodies from the inside of the turkey. Also...allow proper thawing time!
God Bless You, Jeff, Mary and Austin this Thanksgiving!
My love, Laura
Ashley,
Alex and Austin are on the way here as I type. We are suppose to get lake effect snow maybe tonight and Thanksgiving, but I think we'll be lucky and it will miss us. Jess watched the movie Hairspray and said it was funny so I'm going to try to get it and we can watch it when I stay with you. This time I will reserve the TV ahead of time. I have already started my holiday eating-it isn't looking good for me!!!!! Keep working hard at therapy and know our prayers are with you always. Hopefully we will have decent weather Sunday and we can go check out the decorations on Michigan Ave. We love you. Uncle Craig, Aunt Beth, Jess and Alex. P.S. Jessica doesn't like to be last all the time-GOOD GRIEF
Dear Ashley,
How funny! I am always last when Mom signs the card too! Are you last? It isn't fair. The youngest girl of the family HAS to be last. :(
Lots of love,
Angela ;)
P.S.:Aha! I'm first now! Ha! :)
Dear Ashley,
I just made my first pumkin roll. I also found out that if you put four drops of lemon juice and two shakes of baking soda it can make stains disapear like magic! It's very useful information. Anyway, the funniest part about this is I was modeling two different shoes and then forgot to choose! I went to school wearing two different types of shoes. Luckily, it was only a half day. I wouldn't have made it otherwise! Anyway, the sad part about this is that I lost my new High School Musical 2 Soundtrack! :(
Lots of love,
Angela ;)
Hi Ashley,
I have to tell Emily that I believe you got the word cady-wampus from Grandma. She says it all the time. Angela asked me what it meant and I told her it was probably how she was walking today - cady-wampus- with 2 different shoes of different heal heights. I hear your Aunt Janet and family are coming to visit. How fun that will be.
Angela has an issue with being last all the time too. So I'll sign off: Love, Angela, Aunt Lynn and Uncle Stan. (Do you think Uncle Stan will whine now?)
Hey Ashley,
As Thanksgiving Day approaches us tomorrow, I just wanted to tell you how thankful I am to have you in my life. You have always been an amazing friend, someone whom I could always count on to help me through a difficult time and always to greet me every morning with that big beautiful Ashley smile. It's hard to believe that we have known each other for almost 6 years now! It seems like only yesterday, that we were meeting in the fabulous freshmen gym class!
Ashley, I pray for you every single day and I hope that you can feel all of the love and prayers that are constantly being sent your way. I have the picture of me and you from the airport on my dressor! Remember that picture? I had about an hour of sleep, and you looked all cute in your little matchey pink polo sweatsuit! YAY 4 am! woohoo!
You are an amazing person, Ash, who means so much to so many people. And your impact is definitely showing in your dad's blog with how many people looking to hear about you and your family!
I love you so much Ashley!
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO to infinity and back! ~Holly~
The Williams family sends their love and wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving. I pray for your full recovery Ashley!!
Julie Williams
Ashley,
Hang in there. I am so happy you are receiving plasma pheresis treatments. My dad received these with his bout with Guillain-Barr'e. It made such a difference in stopping those bad proteins so that his body could heal.
I know the pain can be very tough to deal with as your myelin sheath is slowly restored. Have faith that it will get better.
We hope you and your family had a pleasant and peaceful thanksgiving.
We keep looking at the calendar to determine a date for a visit. We have to find one and then be free of sniffles. You don't need any more to deal with right now.
Enjoy the big city lights!!!
(Hello to Jeff, Mary and Austin too)
Love,
Shelly Merz
