Ashley received her sixth of seven plasmapheresis treatments today. She is scheduled to receive her final treatment on Wednesday. Our hope is that she will go back to RIC on Thursday to continue rehabilitation.
We had a scare early Saturday morning. Just after midnight Ashley’s temperature started to rise. They began monitoring it more closely and they began placing ice packs on Ashley. By 7am the decision was to move her to ICU.
Jumping back a bit; on Friday she had a visit from old high school friends and later her brother Austin and relatives from Kentucky dropped by. Ashley was laughing with them and Mary and I had an opportunity to go out to dinner that evening. So the fever came as quite a surprise.
By the time the refrigerated blanket Ashley was placed on was able to reverse the fever’s climb Ashley reached a core temperate of 104.9. Needless to say we were very concerned. Ashley’s temperature slowly started to fall. It got down to 102.5 when they decided to give Ashley a break from the extreme cold she had to endure (the blanket temperature hovers around 39 degrees). When her temperature got back up to 103 degrees they turned the blanket back on, but it malfunctioned. By the time another one was placed under her and took affect the core temperature read hit 104.8.
As you might imagine our praying was going into overdrive. We also reached into the reservoir of prayers everyone has been offering up for Ashley. That brought results. Ashley’s temperature began to steadily fall she was tolerating the cold for an extended period. By 11:30 Saturday night her temperature dipped below 101. By Sunday morning her temperature was at (and sometimes below) 98.6.
On Monday Ashley was moved out of the ICU. She is still on the cooling blanket and she is still running a temperature, but nothing like Saturday.
The cause turned out to be an infection from an IV in Ashley’s arm. The doctor that first saw her Saturday morning suspected that and it was removed as soon as they could establish another IV.
Only time will tell how this latest infection will affect Ashley’s progress. She had not fully recovered from the infection that put her in the hospital at the beginning of November. The one thing that is obvious is that Ashley is a fighter. She is focused on getting better and she was not about to let this get the best of her.
We have every confidence that upon returning to RIC Ashley will jump right back into rehab and show us measurable improvement.
Ashley is in a new room with a new view. Fitting for the holiday shopping season she looks out on Water Tower Place. Now if that is not motivation for a 20 year old young lady to focus on getting better I don’t know what is!

My dearest Ash~
First of all I LOVE YOU!! And I've always known you were one hott lady, but never hoped that that would turn literal and I'm glad that you are now on the "cool" side!!
Secondly, I'm very jealous of the view of the water tower!!! next year we'll have to go up there and actually shop, or make that window shop because we most definitely cannot afford those pricey items!
Thirdly, I've done some research on this plasmapheresis thing, and it sounds really promising, I'll have to keep checking in on your progress over the next week or so!
Lastly, I LOVE YOU ASHLEY MARIE!! and want you to know I'm praying for you, don't lose heart God is with you ALWAYS and He will always be able to communicate with you even when you can't communicate with us... yet.
Talk to you later,
much love and a BIG hug!
Rachel!
Ashley-
No. More. Fevers! I'm flipping out over my breakfast (which is when I obsessively check your site... guess what I eat every morning... If you guessed OATMEAL... you're right! BIG SURPRISE!), and then I finally get to the end where you're back to the Normal Range in temp. I run the gamut of emotions when reading your updates!
And as interesting as I find the "chill blanket," I would rather have found out about it in a different way!
You know I'm only giving you a hard time. I want nothing more than for you to get better!
It sounds like you had a good Thanksgiving-- you were in my thoughts CONSTANTLY. So much, that I dream about you at least once a week. That's my sleep-brain keeping up with my conscious prayers. Every thought is for you, Ash.
I'm praying, praying, praying that this Christmas season is good for you. I will have three weeks to come visit you, and I plan to do so. I am so sorry I haven't been to see you again; I've been under the weather and haven't been able to shake it for a couple of weeks and I would not want to bring any unwanted visitors (aka Mr. Germs) into the room with me.
I love you, Ashley Marie. Keep Fighting!!!
XoXo,
Emily
Hello Ashely Dear,
What a scare little lady...your giving me gray hairs! I am happy to hear your temp is down, I'm sure Mom & Dad are too.
I spoke to my brother Mike about your treatments which he too had the same about 15 years ago. The treatments helped him and he is praying that you will get the same results or better!
You rest today and gain your strength. "you have been through so much"
You are always in my prayers~
My love, Laura
Ashley,
So happy to hear you are out of ICU. You are a fighter and will continue to prevail no matter what comes your way!!!! I plan on hanging out with you for a couple days the following week and I'll bring some movies. I have magazines-Hollywood gossip, we can catch up on the dirt. Stay strong and keep fighting. Love and Prayers Aunt Beth, Uncle Craig, Alex and Jess
Hi Ashley,
I am writing a story about a girl named Elizabeth. She is ten. Is that too young to have a crush? You're twenty. You should know. Mom keeps trying to find out who I have a crush on. I keep telling her dad, Zac Efron, and nobody, but she won't believe me! Help! She says to type P.S.: Mom says I'm way too young for a crush. Am I? I am almost nine. I love you soooo much and I miss you. I hope you feel beter really, really soon! Always remember, I love you very, very much! Love, Angela
Hi Ashley,
So glad to hear your temperature has stabilized and that you'll soon be ready to jump into therapy again. You are so strong, we are so proud of you. I feel the need to respond to Angela's comment. Angela keeps telling me about the kids in her class with crushes. So, of course I ask her if she has a crush on someone. She giggles and says no way. I keep telling her she can't have a crush on anyone until she is 21. So far, she believes me. That won't last long, will it? I'll keep you posted on the love lifes of Angela and her 3rd grade classmates. We love you, Aunt Lynn and Uncle Stan.
Dear Ashley, Austin, Mary, and Jeff,
Hi family! Hope you are settled back into RIC by now. We were so sorry to hear of your scary episode last week-end, but with such a strong family unit, and lots of prayers, you were able to fight right through it together!
It's a sunny day here at the Fort, and we're starting to see more and more holiday lights, Christmas trees, and yard decor each night in the neighborhoods. I know Brody will enjoy this Christmas the most so far! I bet the Chi-town view is spectacular during this wonderful season!
Ben and Beth's wedding was awesome. They, along with their bridal party, looked amazing. I'm anxious to show you the photos and fill you in on all the details.
Ashley, please stay strong, and know we all continue to pray for your recovery and send our love your way each day. God's blessings to all of you. Love, Aunt Barb, Uncle Mike, and family
My Dearest and very Beloved Ashley,
I hope you are feeling better! My my my what a week you had with that fever! Ya know I couldve told your doctors why the weird cooling blankie wasn't working! My ash is used to jumping in a below 0 swimming pool at 5am for all those swim practices! Ashley laughs in the face of cold weather ha ha ha!
Anyways, I was so worried as I was reading your dad's blog this week, and I am so glad that your week ended happily and that you are feeling much better! I myself am about ready to collapse from overwork of homework..I have never had so much to do in my life...everyday I make a list of every last detail I have to do so I don't forget something!
Ash, I know I tell you this every week, but I think about you constantly..you are always in my thoughts and prayers. I found a picture of us this week, one from the after prom that we took way too close so our heads look huge! It's so funny, I'll have to show you! Well I think this note is going to be incredibly long as usual and I don't want to hog up your entire blog page..that's what they teach you in the education department you learn how to share with others! haha! I love you so much Ashley and I am hoping that I can see you soon! I love you all the way up to the moon and back! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Hi Ashley,
Well, it happened. It snowed, followed by sleet and ice covered roads. While I was driving to church in it tonite, Grandma called to tell me they just got back from the pool. What a life! I hope you get a room with a view when you move back to RIC. I think the Lake will be beautiful this time of year too. We will be putting up our Christmas decorations this weekend and I am starting to think about shopping. Although, Angela knows that Santa won't be bringing many toys because we're going to Disney over Christmas break. I think I'm more excited than she is about Disney World, and I know I'm more excited about it than Uncle Stan. I might be riding Space Mountain by myself. We love you Ashley. Stay strong. Tell your Dad to post your address and new room number as soon as you make the move back to RIC. Love, Aunt Lynn, Uncle Stan, and Angela (oops, she's last again)
Dear Ashley,
Always remember, God has his arms wrapped around you. He will never leave your side. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Much love Aunt Beth, Uncle Craig, Alex and Jess
