Ashley's long awaited standing frame arrived yesterday evening...
in parts.
Since it was a special order item the supplier did not assemble it. After opening the two large boxes and laying out the parts I grabbed the owners manual. After a quick perusal of the instructions I said to Ashley, "It's kinda like a bicycle. All I have to do is follow these 36 illustrated, some what straightforward, steps!"
Needless to say it is not yet assembled.
On Wednesday Ashley's therapy facility is getting a standing frame (they use a 'tilt' table now to raise clients to a standing position). Since Ashley used a standing frame in Chicago they have asked her to 'model' their new one. Ashley was more than happy to oblige.
Aside from the standing frame Ashley has had a good week. There were a couple of days were she was drowsy during the day so we are going to consult with her doctors to determine if we can yet again reduce some of Ashley's medications. She is having fewer painful spasms and no problems with nasuea. The most common side affects of the meds are drowsiness and nasuea. Ashley seems to have the upper hand on one. It will be nice to reach the point where she is lucid all day everyday.
While we are waiting on Ashley's computer (probably has a similar leadtime as her standing frame) we have been using paper examples of the screens she will see that her speech therapist provided. Ashley is getting more comfortable with them and it is apparent that once she has the computer she will be able to communicate to us what she wants and needs much quicker than our current hit-n-miss approach of questioning.
Related to the computer Ashley makes it clear that she doesn't want the speech therapist to let up on the exercises they are doing to return Ashley's speech. Often times Ashley will hum. She smiles when we ask if she is warming up her vocal cords. She continues to make progress with her eatinig exercises and that will lead to developing the muscle strength needed to speak again.
This is the last week of lent prior to holy week. We can feel all the prayers that you are sending our way. Our pray in return is that God conveys to you His blessing and that you feel His loving guidance.

You are doing great Ashley! Keep up the good work, it is going to pay off very soon! You are still in my prayers every day and my friends at school are always reading the blog updates with me to see the progress being made!
God Bless

Hi Ashley,
I can just see you laughing with your Dad over the assembly of the standing frame. Maybe Austin and your dad can have a contest trying to put it together. So, you are humming now. Do you take requests? Angela wants to hear something from High School Musical (she has a one track mind). I just want to hear your beautiful voice. We are really excited to hear about your computer and what you can do with it. You have come so far, and worked so hard, we are very proud of you. Our prayers continue for you, Austin, and your mom and dad. I will be participating in the 24 hour adoration at our church this weekend and my prayer petitions are for you and your recovery. We love you. Aunt Lynn
Ashley, it sounds like every week you are making amazing progress! The standing frame sounds cool. I hope your dad can get it assembled soon for you. And the computer sounds great too. It will be great to be able to communicate more effectively with everyone.
We love you and we pray for you, your mom and dad and Austin every day. We check your blog all the time, waiting for updates and reading them as soon as we can! Tell your dad to keep them coming.....
Love, The Kentucky Slaters (Jeff, Becky, Dan and Paul)
Ashley,
Doesn't your dad know you start to put things together and if you end up with extra pieces THEN you read the instructions? If your dad decides to do it that way let him try the standing frame first!! Can't wait to hear more about the computer you will be getting-sounds great. I know you continue to work hard everyday and it shows. We love you. Aunt Beth, Uncle Craig, Jessica, Alex.
Ashley--
Hey girl hey!! I love Good News Blogs... and your dad has been posting a lot of good news about you. Keep up this fantastically amazing work. You're doing so well. I am so happy you're "humming." That is great! humhumhumhummmhumhummmhummmm!
I'm in sunny Florida right now. I met Grant's parents-- they're so nice! You would love them. His mom is so friendly and upbeat. They have a wonderful little community down here, and you can tell they really love it. They live in Apollo Beach... don't your grandparents live in Florida? I thought that for some reason... is that correct?
It's so beautiful here, I don't want to leave! School starts up on Monday-- what am I going to do?! No sun! No FUN!!
BUT! I am coming home for Easter-- hopefully you will be available for a lovely chat session! I will tell you about my Spring Break, but as a brief preview, I will tell you this:
For my (pre) birthday gift, Grant took me to Disney! It was great! Perfect weather.
We haven't had one moment's rest the entire time, but it's been fun. His mom took her spring break, so she's been taking us around here and there. Goooood stuff!
I brought those white flipflops with me that you got me for my birthday-- remember? They're so pretty, and have miraculously stayed white! It's been such a good week, and I'm constantly remembering our Mexico trip!
The only problem I had all week was figuring out if I would get to write on your blog for this week. I captured Grant's laptop and stole into my room. If I'm late for dinner, so what? I got to write you. :)
May I suggest a movie for you to watch? I couldn't remember if you're a big Beatles fan, but I do know that you enjoy watching movies and listening to music (and we've rocked out to Oldies before!), and I thought it might be a good stimulator for you. Last summer, a movie was released called "ACROSS THE UNIVERSE." It is a musical of The Beatles' songs, covered by the actors. It is sosososososo (x10000) good. I love it. Grant and I are addicted. The colors and cinematography are fantastic. The singing is beautiful. I thought it might be a good thing for you. Try it out! Maybe we can watch it sometime, or have your parents get it for you!
Alright, I miss you tons and tons.
As always, in my thoughts, in my heart, in my prayers.
Love you! And keep up the amazing work! OH AND CALL MY MOM!
Emily*
