April 14th

Ashley can’t wait to talk. She is creating sounds more than ever and over the weekend she was positioning her mouth to annunciate. We can’t attest to hearing sounds that we could say were words, but Ashley was trying. There are so many signals that have to reach so many muscles to get her speech back. The best news regarding this is that Ashley is not getting frustrated about it; she is encouraged by our reinforcement of her efforts.

Throughout this entire ordeal we continue to be in awe at Ashley’s positive attitude. Like everyone else she has her ups and downs, but we see many more smiles than frowns and whole lot more laughing than crying. Her determination combined with all the prayer support we are receiving is keeps us all going.

In speech therapy last week they lifted the bar on testing Ashley’s cognitive reasoning skills. It has included history homework. Ashley has been tested on Revolutionary War Era topics; specifically on Paul Revere and George Washington. It was a refresher course for Mary and I as well. While Ashley did not ‘ace’ the first test she came away with a solid ‘A’ at 95% correct.

Speaking of therapy, on Friday one of the therapists came over in the morning to assist with Ashley’s morning routine. That evening two more therapists came to watch a movie with Ashley. This was all on their own time. It is a reflection of the true vocation therapy is for the professionals at Lutheran. This is one of the many blessings we have encountered on our path to Ashley’s recovery.

Ashley was able to get outside in the neighborhood some more last week and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Just as Ashley being home has provided a conducive environment for Ashley’s rehabilitation, we are confident that warm sunny weather (needless to say, Ashley’s favorite!) will provide another boost to Ashley’s progress.

Good job Ashley! I am so proud of your effort! Just a little bit more time and the words will be coming out! I hope all is well and hopefully we'll be graced with more good weather so that you may continue to go outside!

God Bless

Ashley,
It's always great to read the updates and learn about your progress. It sounds like all your hard work with the speach therapy is really paying off and soon the words will be coming. And great job with the history test! Know you are ever in my thoughts and prayers.

Ashley,
Yes! We are so excited to hear how well you are doing with speech. Your hard work, determination, and patience are certainly paying off. I notice your Dad didn't say how well he and your mom did on the History test....but we weren't the least bit surprised that you got an "A". Way to go Ashley. We love you, Aunt Lynn, Uncle Stan and Angela

Hey, sweetie!

What fabulous news! You're almost there! That is so amazing. I cannot wait until you can chit-chat! I'm sure you're thinking of all the great accomplishments that can be met once you can really get your thoughts across! I'm really excited for you! Keep working hard on that (as I know you will). You've done such wonderful things already, you'll have this down in no-time!

It's crunch-time down here in West Lafayette. Classes are finished as of April 25, and then the following week is Exam Week. I have projects, papers, and oral presentations all smashed into this next week and a half. I'm going crazy! I just want to come home and see you!

We had our first dress rehearsal on Monday. It went okay. My girls still need to clean. Remember, I told you I choreograph? The girls have come a long way, but they still lag a bit. That's alright-- our show is on Sunday. Hopefully they can get it by then!

Alright, I'm going to be late for class if I don't get a move on!

Keep up the amazing, fantastic, stupendous (there's a new one!) work. Keep smiling that beautiful smile, Ashley.

I can't wait to see you, sweetheart!

I love you!

Love, Jeff, Becky, Dan and Paul

Ashley,

It is so wonderful to hear about your improvements! I do have to agree with your Dad when he mention that your spirit is great..I love seeing your smile and it is always there..in the middle of the day and the middle of the night. "You just smile"...It's because your so sweet. If you ever get down just think of our favorite kitty and be thankful your parents did not give you that name!
I hope to see you soon...it's time for the sprinkler dance again!!
My love to you and family, Laura

Ashley--Way to go from your neighbors behind you-The Ehlerding's (Ryan's family). We are so excited about all of the progress you are making!! Of course, being a swimmer, that's not surprising!! Since Greg & I were both competitive swimmers, we know that all the lessons learned through the sport carry over into life--the hard work & struggles that turn into victory and success over hard fought battles. Please know that we continue to pray for you and for your mom, dad, and Austin. Looking forward to seeing you out and about the neighborhood!!

Love you,
The "Dings"
