We missed posting an update last week, but that wasn’t for lack of news. As you will see from the latest picture added at the bottom of the site Ashley’s standing frame has been assembled and she is using it. We’re glad we had the pros do it. There was a bit of fine-tuning and we wouldn’t want Ashley to be uncomfortable in it.
Over the last couple weeks Ashley has continued to improve in several ways. She is looking to her left much more often and she is moving her right arm more frequently. She is managing to work those tight tendons out. Quite often Ashley will move her arms, or her legs and when we question her to find out if she was trying to get our attention, or if she had a muscle spasm she will indicate that she was merely exercising her control. It is a reflection of Ashley’s determination. We know that therapy and the workouts we do with her at home are quite tiring, both physically and mentally, but she just keeps going.
Sound is another major change. While Ashley is not forming word sounds yet she will respond when asked to say something. Like with moving her arms and legs, Ashley will warm up her vocal cords often. In speech therapy they are confident that it is just a matter of time, and a lot of hard word on Ashley's part, before she will be speaking again.
The warmer weather is a blessing. We got out with Ashley on Saturday and Sunday and plan to do so every day that it is nice out. Nothing seems to please her more than to get outside and to stroll through the neighborhood. It is apparent that Ashley likes bumping into the neighbors, most of whom she has not seen since last summer. Her beaming smile confirms that she enjoys seeing everyone.
We continue to hear of the prayer support that is being offered on our behalf and it is certainly humbling. We don’t know what we did to deserve all the loving support we have received. We are very thankful for it. Ashley’s faith is strong and we can see that she is positively influenced by it as much and the rest of our family is. We would certainly say that prayer is a vital component to making Ashley’s traditional therapy an ongoing success.

Ash-
Love, I have got to tell you, I was going through withdrawal because there was no post last week. I understand you guys are so busy, but I was hungry for some Ashley News! I checked every day! :) It's so good to hear about your last couple of weeks! So I'll forgive you just this once! :)
Yay for standing frame! And hooray for you working on your speech! What positive, positive news to hear! And the sunshine-- oh my goodness. Isn't it a beautiful thing? I'm so happy for you to be able to get out and see neighbors. Only four more weeks and I'll be able to go with you!
Can you believe that? Three weeks of classes and one week of Finals. This year has gone by so quickly-- and look how far you've come! I'm so proud of you!
How is this for bummer news? I have a Final on SATURDAY at 8 in the morning! And that is my worst class. It's British Literature, and the professor says "Um" and "Ok" like they're going out of style. I counted one day, and she said, "UM" 420 times. Isn't that outrageous? How did she ever reach Professor-hood? Jeeeez!!
By the way, we (Grant and I) went to IU to celebrate our 21st birthday! (His is one day after mine.) It was awesome. Tommy and Amie were wonderful hosts, and my cousins Lori Melchi and Mike Melchi, along with Mike's fiancee Lindsey, all came down, too! We had SO much fun!
When we went to buy our alcohol in the store, Grant and I got carded twice-- I guess my no-make-up and sweats combination isn't very "mature!" Oh, dear, and my new ID picture... I look pretty snarky. What a fun word! "Snarky." But I definitely should have asked to get it redone! Oh well! Not like I'll be using it too much, anyway. One night of celebration was enough for me!
I miss you so incredibly much. I can't wait to come home, I'm quite homesick. Pretty soon it's going to be gorgeous weather, and with your improvements and all of these prayers, who knows what this summer will bring!
Keep up the amazing work, Ashley. You're doing so well, you're working so hard, and your progress is such a wonderful indicator of that! You're so inspirational!
I love you!
XoXo,
Emily*
PS. Have your parents call my mom to come visit with you!
Ashley,
I'm glad to hear things are still progressing so well! You are still in my thoughts, prayers, and hopes. Oh, and don't give Mike too much of a hard time :)

Dear Ashley,
Great news about all of your progress. We are so excited about your increased movement and hard work with speech therapy. It was beautiful this weekend and we got out in it too. We chopped down the large cherry tree in front of the Lake house. (Well, Stan chopped and I carried.) Uncle Dave, Aunt Kathy, Kelly and Jeff were there to help us, thank goodness! It was kind of scary with him up that high and those huge branches and parts of the trunk coming down so close to the house. But it's one more job done in getting ready for summer. We hope the weather stays nice for you so you can continue getting out. Love, Aunt Lynn
Ashley
Keep up the good work! You are an inspiration to all of us. You remain in my thoughts & prayers.
God bless!
Who I am is not important. It's all about who you are and YOU ARE AMAZING!
Way to go Ashley!
I get excited to hear about how you're doing. I check your blog almost every day. You're seriously one of my heros right now. I know I couldn't take what you're going through with as much determination and grace as you have. Every single picture of you shows you smiling.
I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
Your friend,
Justine
Of all the things I question in life, I have one answer in my mind. What you need is that one person who keeps you going, that one person who manages to take all the pain away. It amazes me that the one person who stays with you through everything makes you forget about all the others who didn't. A single soul out of the billions in the world can make you feel like you are the world to me. Life is only worth living if there is someone worth living for. You need that someone who fills the empty space in your heart, someone who lets you know you're so much more than enough. I hope everyone finds that someone who makes their days worth while because i sure have. thank you for being there!!
^(i didnt make that up,but i thought of you when i read it)

Ashley,
The standing frame looks cool. I'm glad your dad had a professional put it together. It made me nervous when he told us it was all in pieces. I could picture the standing frame put together and then your dad discovering one piece left over. Can you tell that happens often at our place!!! The weather has been such a treat. Like you I have been out as much as possible. I started back to my walking routine and boy do my shins hurt. Jess had a blast on the cruise and of course wants to go on another one-with her friends!!!!!! It was nice to see Austin, and it sounds like he had fun with your dad. I know you will keep up the hard work. We are so proud of you. Love The Cassidys
Ashley,
I'm so glad that I was able to talk to you and your mom today! It sounds like you are loving the warm weather and getting outside whenever you can. I'm certainly glad that the winter is finally over! It's nice to be outside again :)
I can't wait to visit you on May 10! I'll give you a call on Saturday when I'm leaving school. See you in four weeks!!!
Love,
Kelly :)
Hello Ashley Marie!
Each time I log onto this blog and see that beautiful picture of you smiling and then scroll down to see more of you smiling even when you've been through SO much it gives me strength. I can see you know giving me that quizzical look and wondering how I would be getting strength from you, but you have gone through SO much in the last 9 months and just keep pushing through.
When I'm having a tough week, I just think of you and you smile and your giggle and even though you aren't here with me, its contagious and I start to giggle too. I'm sorry I haven't come to visit you since you've been home, but I'm done with school in 3 1/2 weeks (who's counting?!?) and I'll be there! Maybe we can take a walk in the sunshine!! yay for spring!
Thanks for always making me smile.. you are my inspiration, pal!
All my love and of course a big hug for you and your mom, dad, and Austin!
~Rach~
