January 21st

Sorry for the hiatus in postings. It certainly was not for a lack of news. So let's get right to it...

Where is Ashley?

If you have been in this room before you know where Ashley is and you realize the significance of it. She is sitting on her bed in her UPSTAIRS bedroom. How did she get there you ask? Did we carry her up there? Actually Ashley walked up the 13 steps and down the hall to her room (with balance assistance). In fact she walked to all the rooms on the upper level. Her leg strength proved to be more than enough to lift her weight and climb the stairs. Her smile was beaming as we 'toured' her room and she saw how she left it over 18 months ago. She did not sleep upstairs, but we are looking for that day to come sooner rather than later. The reason for that is going down the stairs was much more of a challenge. While Ashley is doing a good job of walking and stepping up; going down is another story. We need to incorporate that into her therapy now. She had a difficult time bending the leg that would remain on the upper step and keeping the leg that moved to the lower step straight. With mom and dad assisting we got her down (no she did not have to resort to sliding down on her back side).

Needless to say we were all very excited and we know you are too!

The great news does not stop there. Through the loving support of several hundred people a wheelchair accessible van now sits in our garage. We picked it up this past Saturday and that means Ashley was able to go to church in her regular wheelchair and is now going to therapy in her own van. Don't be surprised if you bump into Ashley when you are out and about. She has a new found freedom and we are going to make the most of it for her.

We will never be able to adaquately thank everyone that so lovingly donated to make this a possiblity. God bess you all!

The good news does not stop there (of course we have nearly three weeks of catching up from the last blog). Ashley has been eating quite well lately. She is now requesting more food after we get done with the typical portion. She is also requesting thickened liquids more often which is more of a challenge. Thank you dear heavenly Father for keeping Ashley so motivated even after 18 months!

Her overall strength continues to improve. Her balance while sitting is better and she has even pushed herself up from a down position to sitting up.

We have a gym mat at home and Ashley is able to roll from side to side. It is also exciting to see that whether it be rolling on the mat, transfering from sitting to standing, or walking that Ashley is doing it quicker and more smoothly in addition to doing so with more strength.

Ashley's speech therapist is continuing to add more features to her communication PC and Ashley is doing quite well in picking up the new features and using them properly. The same therapist asked Ashley who our president was on the 20th (in the afternoon) and given the choices of Bush, McCain and Obama she picked Obama. Let's all pray that our new president is as dedicated to his job as Ashley is to hers!

Ash--

Omgosh! What a GREAT surprise to wake up to! As soon as I saw the blue and white, cloud-theme walls, I knew it was your bedroom and I was SO EXCITED for you! Yay! Hooray! Woo-hoo! Way to master those stairs. Soon enough, you'll get the "down" down-pat and be able to move back into your room! Woo!

It sounds like you're making even MORE progress than when I was home a couple weeks ago. That's so wonderful; I'm so proud of you! Like I said, that PC is pretty awesome and you maneuver through it so well. I'm so happy you finally got your van! That must be so much easier for your family. And it also sounds like the EAT part of the prayer is working as well. How do you feel about getting those "oral" food in?! I'm so excited for you!

We didn't get to talk much when I came home-- you were busy kicking butt, which I was so excited to see!-- but don't worry: nothing too interesting is happening. Even though it's only the second week, it feels like we've been in class forever already.

This COM class that I'm taking, called "Interpersonal COM" or, basically, how people speak/relate/react to one another, assigned a specific homework on Tuesday. Guess what it was? We have to see how long we can go without texting or Facebooking! Facebook isn't that big of a deal; I don't really care for it. It's mainly something to browse through when I'm bored. I avoided the computer for about 10 hours yesterday altogether. When I finally got on it, I checked my e-mail and watched some episodes, but I DIDN'T get on Facebook!

Texting... texting on the other hand... I had to call Szebo to tell him that I couldn't text him (people are allowed to text me, but I cannot text back)... but other than that, it's not TOO hard. A friend even called me instead of texting because she "didn't want to tempt" me. Ha! The last text message I sent out was at 1:30pm Tuesday (1/20). At this point, that's almost 24 hours. I've had a couple of text messages that demand a "Text back" and I had to call them to explain the situation... even though we wouldn't normally talk on the phone... and that's basically the point! haha Oh, and just to give you a rough idea, I think my monthly text messages are about 1200. Yes, I know. Thank God for the IN-Plan. (I'm sure your parents are aghast at this moment!... Because mine certainly are!)

Well, that's about the highlight of my events... I'm about to go to work! Although I use that term loosely. She's 8 months old and her name is Quincy and I baby-sit her for a few hours a week. She is ADORABLE. Yay, easy jobs! And normally she sleeps through it! Oh, how will I ever manage... haha!

I hope you have a wonderful week. Please keep up the amazing work; you're doing so well. You are such an inspiration to so many. Keep that beautiful smile on. I miss you tons, Ashley Marie. Walk! Talk! Eat!

I love you!

XoXo,

Emily*

Ash-o-lee, I would recognize that cloud room anyday! It's as much a part of my growing up as my own room. I keep on thinking of your birthday party right after you had re-decorated your room. We got all dressed up and posed for "glamor" shots in front of the clouds. How cool we're we? haha

I love hearing about your accomplishments. You're doing so great! We never doubted you, Ashey. You're a fighter (kind of like that Christina Aguilera song)!

Love you and I can't wait to see you soon!
Sam

Hi Harrington family,

Congratulations on your latest success! Our kids go to St. Vincent's and we've been cheering and praying for you on your road back to health. Our daughter Amy is on growth hormone therapy due to a genetic condition that researchers are finding causes delayed myelination. I didn't know if any of your medical professionals have mentioned this or if it is even an option in Ashley's specific case. I feel strange telling you this but I would feel worse if I didn't tell you something that could possibly help. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

Here's to a year of continued progress! The Connolly's

Ashley, Sweet you got to see your room. Jessica finally decided that 2 jobs were 1 to many. I was surprised when she decided to stop working at the clothing store and stay at Suzie's cafe. I didn't think she would beable to give up all the clothes!! She won't get her 40% discount anymore-that is going to hurt!! She just didn't have the time and she wants to stay in basketball and a club called CASS that helps younger children who are struggling. Now that she will have more time do think she will help me around the house? Alex on the other hand is working more because someone quit. He likes the classes he is taking but he is getting run down. He is now sick, nothing major just a bad cold, however when he gets sick he looses weight and he really can't afford that. Gee, to have that problem! It has stayed pretty cold here but at least no new snow to shovel. Our snowblower bit the dust-bummer. Keep up the good work and hope to see you all soon. Love Cassidys

Ashley,

You are the ultimate example of what true courage, commitment, and determination look like. What a special example you are to me, one who stumbles under much lesser travails. As I pray for you each morning on my drive to work, I recognize that your confidence and perseverance lifts me up also.

Hebrews 10:35 says: "Do not, therefore, abandon the confidence of yours; it brings a great reward." You, Ashley, are the great reward for so many others.

Peace to you, your brother and parents,

Trish (Florida family)

Ashley,

It sounds like you continue to make progress. Congratulations! We are praying for your continued success.

Dan and Paul will be jealous of the gym mat. They had to miss wrestling practice today due to the snow we received last night. We are getting an ice storm this evening so they will also miss school tomorrow. They don't mind missing school, but they hate missing wrestling practice. So I know they would like to check out your gym mat.

Love Jeff, Becky, Dan and Paul Slater

Ashley---WOW. Been reading about the great progress you're making. Keep it up. Would love to drop by and see you sometime.

You know, being swimmers as we are, you know all of the dedication, sacrifice, & hard work that went into being a good athlete. Well, that obviously has carried over into your therapy. Your determination to accomplish ALL that you have is an inspiration. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
