February 28th

Let it snow…

Ashley took advantage of the heavy snow this month by going for a sled ride through the back yard.

The most exciting advance this month has been Ashley’s improved ability to swallow fluids. As followers of the site know Ashley has been eating pureed foods for over a year. Drinking liquids without occasionally chocking remained a challenge. Ashley has been drinking up to 3 ounces in a sitting the last couple of weeks without a problem. About a week ago we heard a sound that would normally be considered poor manors, but for us was an event for celebration; Ashley, using a straw, reached the bottom of her glass and slurped!

We have every confidence that 2010 will see the removal of Ashley’s feeding tube. Thank you all for your continued prayers that have helped Ashley reach this point.

February means Valentines Day and Ashley pitched in to make some cookies.

Speaking of cookies…

On the eating front, as we reported last month, Ashley has been able to pick up a pretzel rod and graham cracker and get it to her mouth and take a bite. It is still a laborious process but Ashley just yesterday added a third item to her list. She is now picking up cinnamon flavored corn puffs and eating them. We are looking forward to the day that she can have a bowl of these and eat them like popcorn all on her own.

The Eating portion of Walk, Talk and Eat is on a promising track.

Since Ashley has had physical therapy in the pool twice a week she has increased her ability to kick her legs, roll over and as you can see from this picture Ashley is a right at home in the water.

Ashley is getting down the stairs from her bedroom on the weekends easier. She is going down side ways using the wall for support. While we were right there to spot her she took most of the steps on her own. This approach has proven a lot easier for Ashley than going down straight.

Last week Ashley accompanied Aunt Ann and Mom to the Fort Wayne Home and Garden show. They had a good time seeing the wide variety of exhibits. Later Ashley said the variety and sheer size of the show made it tiring for her. All of that visual stimulation is still a lot for her to absorb. Even so she had a good time and was glad see went.

While we are still relying on spelling words with Ashley our conversations continue to broaden. We are going beyond responding to basic needs and comfort and getting into more in depth conversations. This is a good thing because Ashley is frequently reminding both mom and dad of things we discussed in the past and forgot to follow through on. It just shows how complex Ashley’s malady is. While some functions are severely affected by her demyelization there are some areas that are not affected and, encouragingly, other areas that are healing and revealing welcome progress in her recovery.

Although we still have snow on the ground we are anxious for some warm weather in March so Ashley can get outside and take a walk in the neighborhood. It may be a short walk but it will be a walk and we hopeful that it will be the start of ever increasing distances this year.

Hi Ashley, love the pics. I have to say, looks like you're floating a lot better than I would be :)
Spring is in the air -- well, almost. It's just around the corner.
Ya'll take care. (not that long since we were in Ga:)
Love,
Aunt Kathy and Uncle Dave xx

ASHLEY DEAR!
Look at you playing in the snow, baing cookies and swimming in the pool! Did you help your mom build a snowman too? You're very lucky Adrienne and I weren't helping you bake those cookies. We all can recall the incident of Age and I having to bake 2 separate batches of from the box cookie mix because we messed up the first time! haha! After looking at all of your beautiful pictures, I love your spirit Ash! Your never give up attitude is so inspiring to sooo many of us and I hope you know that. I started my new placement today with all of my precious special needs students. Let me just say its a little bit intimidating when the kiddos you are supposed to be teaching are bigger than you are. I was like starring up in this kid's face going if you don't walk correctly up the stairs your going to walk up again. It was quite a jump from my teeny little second graders. My new teacher is awesome, and my old teacher, whom I love dearly called me after school to ask about my day and tell me she missed me. I miss them soooo much! I am sending them a surprize on Wednesday along with a singing card! haha! SHH!My former class made sent me goodbye wishes and pictures I will have to show you...they are adorable. I noticed your dad commented on the lovely weather. I also am waiting somewhat patiently (cough cough) for the warmer weather since I usually am freezing cold until its 80 degrees outside! hah! Well, I think I better end my post before I take up half the page..again! haha! Love you to pieces!
XOXOXO, Holly Anne

Hello, Ashley and Family!

I've said it once, I've said it a million times, and I will keep on saying it: you are truly amazing. I am so inspired by you and all of your accomplishments, and most especially your spirit and determination.

I am so happy to see you back in the water again! I bet it feels just right, so perfect! I'm sure feeding yourself is a wonderful feeling too! Yay! So exciting! Although I'm not one for snow, I'm glad you got to play outside and not be cooped up inside all of this long, terrible winter. Come on, God... Sunshine time!

I'm happy communication is increasing and deepening. Although I am on pins and needles waiting to hear your voice, I am beyond pleased you are able to express yourself now. Yay!

Nothing new to report on my end. Still waiting on two more schools to hear from. You'd be amazed at my patience level. OK, so I haven't been the poster child for calm patience, but still. The fact that I haven't stormed the schools' gates yet and demanded entrance is saying something, right?

As I've mentioned before, my spring break is coming up and I hope we can see each other. I miss you and it's been so long! A few weeks after that is Nicole's spring break and my parents, Tommy, Amie, myself, Z, and Nicole are all going on vacation together! The entire family hasn't been together on spring break since Tommy was a junior in high school (making you and me freshman in high school!). We're really excited!

Well, class is calling-- I'm taking a class on Tolkien this year! The man who wrote Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, etc? Yes, yes, that DOES make me a huge nerd. My professor looks like he rolled out of Middle Earth himself. He's from New Zealand, so you know everything he says is just wonderful because of his accent :) He has white hair and a white bushy beard. It's great.

I miss you tons. Keep up the amazing work! Keep smiling your beautiful smile! I love you, Ashley!

Walk, Talk, Eat!

XoXo,

Emily

Hey Ashley!
I'm so glad to hear that things are going well! Thats sooo exciting for you and your family! Its so nice to see the blog even though I'm far away! I'm planning on coming home in April since we have a two week break here, so hopefully I'll be able to stop by once to see you!
Things are going really well here. I just dropped some of my classes since my students will be starting internships, giving me more free time during the week which is really really nice. The week before last I was in Rome on vacation and it was amazing! I love Italy and loved the warmer weather. Luckily, it's been getting warmer here in Nancy, again a plus, since I walk about 30 minutes to get to campus!
Well, I love you lots, Ash and can't wait to see you soon!
Love and hugs,
Erika

Dear Ashley,
I hope you enjoyed all of the warmish weather we were having last week! Maybe you even went outside! As for me, I am another week closer to Spring Break since I have to wait and have my break with FWCS. Let the countdown begin! I cannot wait! Last week was interesting. Most of the students I work with spend time in the office or the principal's office on a daily basis, so I usually have to pull kids out of time out to teach them! haha! It's challenging, but I love the special education part of my degree the best. You really feel like you can make a difference to kids who usually aren't given much of a chance to succeed. Remind me to tell you the story about the rhyming words...I almost cried I was trying to hold back laughter. Tomorrow will be the ultimate test because my teacher won't be there, so the pressure is on me to handle all of the situations throughout the day. ahhh! I so got this! haha! As for my other teacher from the 2nd grade class, I talk to her via email or text message about every day! hah! We even had lunch together that last weekend! How was the Dear John movie? I bet it was so sad. I already read the book so I guess I'd know what's coming! Hopefully, Channing Tatum didn't let you down! haha! Love you so much and I hope this next week continues to get even warmer for all of us stuck, I mean happily residing, in the Fort!haha XOXOXO
Holly
