The highlight of Ashley’s last week had to be the two and a half hours we spent out on Navy Pier on Saturday. First of all who would have thought it would be shirt sleeve weather this late in October? Two factors that were present could have made Ashley uncomfortable that was the sheer duration of time in her wheelchair without being repositioned and the second was getting over stimulated by the large crowd. Neither had an adverse affect on Ashley; she thoroughly enjoyed it.
For a follow up on Sunday we walked along the Lake Michigan shore and then visited the park that is next to Navy Pier and viewable from Ashley’s window. The sights were spectacular and Ashley was taking it all in with smiles.
On Saturday night Ashley took a phone call from Kevin. Kevin lives in Denver and is recovering from ADEM. He was struck thirteen months ago. He told Ashley to hang in there and to keep up the hard work. We appreciated Kevin’s encouragement and it was obvious that Ashley was hanging on every word he spoke. Here was someone that was in her condition and he was speaking, could walk and was able to do many things on his own. She was listening to hope; that she too can, and will recover.
During the week Ashley tried a new device in physical therapy. It was similar to an exercise bike. The difference was that this unit was set to turn with Ashley’s feet strapped in at a slow rate. If Ashley applied pressure to the pedals it would record that. The system ran for several minutes. At the end it showed that Ashley did indeed, at times, apply pressure to the pedals and was pedaling. She also appeared to enjoy it.
While Ashley has her moments of sadness and we all wish her progress was faster it is amazing how often Ashley is smiling and laughing along with us. It is not possible to know what she is going through; even so it’s hard to imagine what it would take to keep your spirits up when your body is not doing what your mind is asking it to do. It shows that Ashley is up for this challenge.
The cards she continues to receive and the posting on her blog that we read to her must be providing some of that inspiration. She is witnessing how much love and prayerful support is on her side.

Ash--
Hey sweetheart! I know I've said it before and I'm sure I'll keep telling you this but:
I eagerly await your updates every week. I check compulsively every day, even though I know your daddy updates on Mondays. I just love to read about how well you're progressing-- and progressing you are! And oh, how happy/excited I was when I read that you got to talk to someone who is working through this! That makes my heart so happy! I bet that gave you even more determination, huh?
How jealous I am that you're getting to enjoy all of the sights of Chicago. Absolutely amazing! I'm so glad this good weather is holding out for you, I know how much you love the outdoors. I'll suffer through my 90* walks to class if it means you get a sunshiney day!! hahaha :)
You are always in my thoughts and prayers, Ashley Marie. If ever you're feeling frustrated or beaten down, just remember I'm here pulling for you.
I love you, Ash!!

We continue to pray for all of you each day - Ashley, for your complete and speedy recovery, and for Jeff, Mary and Austin, that God may give you the strength, courage and patience to perservere.
We love you!

Hey Ash,
I am so happy that your dad is technologically inclined and has put together such a nice blog for you! (Thank you Mr. H!)I am always checking it throughout my day and sometimes I find myself reading the same blogs over just to hear about how you are!
I am so happy to hear that you were out and about again and especially at Navy Pier! I have a picture of the Navy Pier sign on my camera phone! I am also so happy to hear that you got to talk to Kevin. He is living proof that strength and prayers can make a difference and Ash you got both the strength and the prayers!
I also wanted to tell you that I was cleaning out my drawers...(yes I know being the compulsive neat freak that I am I was cleaning)...and I found this picture of us from Junior year at the airport at 4am! Remember that! I had like 2 hours of sleep and looked really crappy and you were all cute in your little pink Tommy outfit! It's so funny! I put that picture on my mirror in my room!
Ash, I know I tell you this every time I write you, but to bad I'm telling you again because it's true! You are always in my thoughts, always in my prayers and forever in my heart. I miss you tons and bunches and I love you to the moon and back!
XOXOXOXO ~HOlly~
Ashley,
So great to see a picture of you! You look terrific! Navy Pier, Lake Michigan - what wonderful places to be able to see and visit! Keep up the great work - you look like you're doing well! We're going to get up to see you very soon!
Take care & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
Love,
Mike, Vicki, & Ben
Dear Harringtons,
It is wonderful to see photos of your smiling faces in Chicago! We miss all of you.
We have all been blessed with such beautiful weather this fall! Though a little cooler the last few days, (high 50's), it's still very pleasant for October. So happy to hear you were able to take advantage of the warm sunshine this past week-end to stroll through Navy Pier, and along Lake Michigan.
With just over 4 weeks to go before Ben and Beth's wedding, we are keeping busy finishing up the final details. Hard to believe the big day is almost here!!!
Ashley, you are always in our prayers!! We know that you and your family continue to work hard to assist you in regaining your strength. We hope Kevin's call gave you added determination and reaffirmed the fact that you will continue to get better!
We love you so much, and can't wait to see you!
Love, Uncle Mike, Aunt Barb, and family
Hi Ashley!
I am Kevin's mom and I want to let you know that things will get better for you. I know how hard it is for you right now and I remember Kevin going through the same thing. But, it does improve with time and lots of hard work. Kevin had the same problem you do with his right arm. It didn't work at all and he is right handed, but he has learned to compensate with his left and has actually gotten very good with the left. And now I see improvements in his right arm. He can now write his name and use the mouse.....course Mom makes him do it. It takes a little longer, but he gets the job done. Ashley, your parents and family as well as myself can't begin to imagine what you and Kevin are going through, but I have never seen harder workers and better troopers than you. I think part of it is that you are both athletes and you know what hard work can do and how hard you have to work for it. If you have any questions or if Kevin can help answer your quetions, please just have your parents get in touch with us. I would sit next to Kevin's bed and watch him going through all of this and wonder what was going to happen and then all of a sudden one day the improvement started and it hasn't stopped. Kevin is going back to Select Hospital tomorrow after his MRI. They are still always amazed to see him in a vertical position and not a horizontal one. Some of the people didn't even recognize him the last time we were there. He is going to see the doctor who treated him there and you have to picture this......his doctor is about 5'4" and Kevin is 6'8"....what a sight, but what wonderful men they both are. Please know that we are thinking of you always and praying that you will continue to progress. No one has more courage that you do. You certainly have a lot of people pulling for you. Take care,
Barbara Hession
Ash,
Lots going on here in the fort. I am going to Germany Nov 1 with my sister-in-law and her mother for a stem cell procedure. She had a stroke and cannot talk or use her right side. The are taking stem cells from her hip and reinjecting them via epidural. They say it is 80% effective and we should see some results in 3 months. I am going to ask if this would be effective for adem patients (you never know). I am hoping to stop by and see you and your mom before we leave on saturday.
We are planning a baby shower for Tessa when you get home , a slater gals reunion. That should be fun!
Uncle Dave has started working on getting the house ready for your homecoming , we are all looking forward to that day! You are always in our thoughts and prayers , we love you
Uncle Dave , Julie , Britny , Brooke and Bruiser . We got a new dog :)
Ashley,
My daughter, Claire, was on the swim team at Glenaqua for the first time last summer. We pray for a complete recovery for you every night. God bless!
