Ashley is getting settled back into RIC. Since she was at Northwestern for nearly a month she is going through her re-evaluation by each of the therapy groups which started today.
Although we did not see dramatic changes in Ashley following the plasmapheresis she is showing improvements. She seemed more engrossed then before when we read comments off her blog to her. She had a range of emotions from laughing at the funny statements to crying at the serious passages. While no one wants to see their child cry we know that a lack of that emotion would not be normal. Ashley has very few bouts of depression and normally we can console her in a short time. She is showing a health motional range which is part of the improvement we are seeing.
Our hopes and prayers at that the staff at RIC will capitalize on those advancements and assist Ashley on accomplishing new milestones. By the middle of the week Ashley’s Physiatrist will tell us how long he is targeting for Ashley to remain at RIC. Of course our goal is to have Ashley in good health and on a track to recovery that we can continue from home via in-home and out-patient therapy.
Last week when we talked about going back to RIC Ashley would react positively, raising her arms and smiling. Obviously she was ready to leave the hospital and get back to therapy.
Mary picked up a small Christmas Tree for Ashley (a photo is posted to the bottom right of the page) and we are planning on celebrating Christmas with Ashley at RIC.
Meanwhile at home we are setting up the Christmas decorations while at the same time making preparations for Ashley’s return. The main project is the construction of a roll-in shower on the main level of the house and temporarily converting the living room into Ashley’s bedroom. The framing and electrical is done. Next comes the plumbing and then the tile work. We won’t be in need of a ramp. Ashley’s social worker said her wheel chair will be able to handle the couple of spaced out steps we have whether coming in the front door or garage.
Ashley is remaining strong which is a reflection of her faith. Each day as we approach Christmas we with thank God for the gift of Ashley. We know she has been an inspiration to so many before her illness and will continue to be as she works to recover. Thank you for your continued prayers. They are being answered and we are grateful.

Hi Ashley,
Sounds like the guys are making progress on the homefront and you and mom are making progress at northwestern. I like your christmas tree. I have mine up but haven't decorated it yet. I'm anxious to hear what the physiatrist has to say this week. I saw Tessa and her new baby today, she is so tiny and sweet. Lara had a birthday party for Jesse, he liked the balloons more than the presents. Well Ashley I'll be thinking of you each day and sending my love and prayers. Kisses to you and your mom. Love, Aunt Ann
Hello, Ashley and all of the Harrington Family. It is hard to imagine that Christ's birthday is 15 days from today. The weather is icy here in the Fort. The roads aren't bad, but the driveways aren't too good. Jeff and I drove Alison back to Ball State yesterday because of the weather, so her car is parked in the driveway. I was worried this morning that as Blair backed out of the garage and turned around that she would slide right into AC's car. Alison has not had the best luck w/ cars and driveways--oh, not that others are hitting her car--it's the other way around. Alison has twice backed into someone's parked car in the drive!!
Our family will continue to pray for you and your family. May this season of miracles shine on you in some way---little or big---and speed up your recovery. We miss seeing you at St Vincent's.
God Bless you today and all of your tomorrows.
The Sorgs--Jeff, Barb, Alison, Blair, and Nick
Ashley, we loved seeing you a few weeks back! You were so fun and so happy. You laughed at all the boys' silly jokes (and there were a lot of them!). We're glad to see you are strong and improving every day. We love you so much and pray for you and your family every day. Keep up the good work and we hope to see you in Fort Wayne before too long! Love,
Jeff, Becky, Dan and Paul
Hi Ashley,
I'm glad to hear that you are perking up and that you're back working hard again in therapy. I continue to pray for you, and you and your family are always in my thoughts.
Not a whole lot is new with me... we have a really weird finals schedule this year- we have a study day this Thursday, then we have finals on Friday, SATURDAY, monday, tuesday, and wednesday. Of course, my math finals aren't until early next week! It would have been nice to just get them over with sooner.
I am really excited for Christmas break as I am going to try and come visit you again-- I will be working during most of break, but hopefully I will be able to make the trip up to Chicago for a visit.
Thinking of you,
your friend Courtney
PS. Here are a few cute Christmas jokes I thought you might enjoy!
"How do you know Santa has to be a man?" No woman is going to wear the same outfit year after year!
"What nationality is Santa?"
North Polish!
"What reindeer has the cleanest antlers?"
Comet
"Where do Santa's reindeers like to stop for lunch?"
Deery Queen.
~~~~~~
"What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?"
Frostbite
Ashley,
Yahoo, you're back at RIC. As soon as Uncle Craig helps me load the pictures we took Saturday I'll send them to your dad so you can see them. Ok, Uncle Craig isn't going to HELP me he is going to do it!!! Get ready, Jess is going to get High School Musical 2, so I'm sure she will want to show off her dance moves-maybe I will too!! I have to work this weekend but I will try hard to get back up to see you before Christmas. Thanks for such a wonderful weekend. I feel so blessed that I was able to be with you. I wish it could be more often. The best gift is when I see you smile and hear you laugh. I know you will continue to work hard and stay strong. We love you tons. Aunt Beth, Uncle Craig, Alex and Jessica
Ash-
Hey sweetheart! I'm sorry I haven't posted before this, I've been studying for finals. Once again, my finals are at the END of the week, but fear not, I did not stay in West Lafayette. No, no, I learned from THAT mistake last year!
I went home last Friday until Thursday morning and I studied, studied, studied. Oh, and I cooked. Ma was in Michigan doing some Christmas Shopping, Dad was at work and Nick was at school. I said, "Good thing I came back from Purdue where I do all of my own cooking and cleaning to come home and do all of yours!" I tell you, they have NO respect! :)
As always, Ash, you're on my mind. I recently remembered one time during spring semester, senior year of high school, you came out of your car with your sunglasses on and you and I were so excited that it was sunny in the morning, and all winter you said you had been looking forward to the day you could wear your sunglasses on the way to school.
Well, Ash, I'm looking forward to that day for you. I'm seeing the rays of sunshine in your improvements, and I'm getting so excited!
I love you, Ashley Marie. I can't wait to see you over Break!
God Bless!!
XoXo,
Emily
Hi Ashely,
Back to RIC..that is great! What a beautiful Christmas tree you have in your room, but I believe all Christmas trees are beautiful. John & I cut our tree last weekend. I had to find the biggest and the one that was to the very back of the tree farm so that John would have to drag it a far far way. "He loves me" There were kitty cats at the tree farm and they decided to follow me all around. I think they wanted to come home with me!
I have been watching the Christmas commercials on TV and one of them for Hallmark has carolers ringing the door bell and they hand the neighbor a musical card and it reminded me of story to tell you. Your Aunt Ann, mother and I when we were younger (just a few years ago) at Christmas time would go to the neighbors and ring the door bell. When they would turn on the light and start to open the door we would start singing Christmas carols to them. See we had to ring the door bell because there was only just the three of us and we tried just singing "no one heard us". They would invite us in for cookies and hot cocoa...yum!
Anyway..when I see that commercial it brings back fond memories.
Have your mom sing a few lines!!!
I'll be thinking of you each day and love you. Love to your mother.
Hugs....Laura
Ashley,
It's 11:00 pm and Jessica just remembered she needed to take a treat to school. Luckily we had brownie mix and eggs! I can't believe all the snow. Thank goodness everyone was able to make it into work. If employees can't make it in the people who are there have to stay. It's called a code white-not good! I plan on finishing my Christmas shopping tommorrow. Uncle Craig took the day off so I may drag him to the mall, that should be fun. Jessica's secret santa from work gave her a High School Musical sweat outfit, it's actually cute. She wants me to tell you she is going to get her hair cut. I know it's a big decision, that's all she has been talking about the past week! Please wish her luck and me too, because if she doesn't like it that's all I'll hear about for the next month. Hope to come and visit soon. Stay strong! Love Aunt Beth, Uncle Craig, Alex and Jess
