December 17th

Ashley has had a successful transition back to Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) this past week. She has gotten right back into therapy and each of the therapists felt that Ashley was ahead of where she was when she left RIC for active treatment in November. Among the milestones this week was Ashley eating (small amounts of course) apple sauce. Although she has taken small amounts of ‘thickened’ liquids as part of her swallowing practice, her speech therapist feels Ashley has coordinated all of the muscles involved to where she can actually take several bites of a pureed food.

Ashley’s attention span and eye contact also appear to be improving. A great move forward is the return of Ashley’s sense of humor. We have not seen her laugh as hearty as she is now since she had a high fever back in October which landed her in the hospital.

In a technology session Ashley was asked to follow objects on a computer screen. The goal of the exercise is to determine if Ashley can use a computer screen which uses a laser to track her eye glances to objects on the screen that could represent words for communication. The first objects were black balls that appeared one at a time on different parts of the screen. Ashley tracked two of the five. Then the technician changed the object to a picture of a cat. Ashley tracked five of five! We are hopeful that this will lead to a successful implementation of interactive communication for Ashley in the not to distant future.

So we are seeing some rebounding, but also some marked improvement.

Ashley’s room is now on the west side of RIC. She no longer has a view of Lake Michigan, but there is not much to see on the lake this time of year. Most of her view is of the old Woman’s hospital, but she also has a clear view of Water Tower Place and the Hancock Building.

On Saturday Ashley listened to a phone call from another sufferer of ADEM. Al was stricken in 2000 just after finishing college as a chemical engineer major. Not only has Al gotten the upper hand on ADEM, it has also changed his vocation. Al started medical school this year with a goal of becoming a neurologist. Ashley’s eyes were glued to the phone as Al spoke and it reminded me of her call from Kevin who also has ADEM. We could tell that Ashley was hanging on every word they both spoke. She knows this can be overcome and both Al and Kevin are an inspiration to her.

As we have mentioned in the past the support Ashley and our family have received has been humbling. At the top of the list are our thanks for your prayers. The cards and letters Ashley receives and the comments we read her from her blog also put a smile on her face and we know that it boosts her morale. Ashley is getting cards, letters, mass intentions and notes from many people we don’t even know. The love behind each of those acts plays a critical role in Ashley’s recovery. Last week Ashley received a mail tube that was filled with Christmas posters from students in the 4th grade at St. Luke School in Boardman, Ohio. We don’t know anyone at St. Luke’s; I had to look at a map to find Boardman (it is south of Youngstown). We have a couple of guesses as to how they heard of Ashley. The fact that they have invested their time and love to show Ashley their support is priceless. The same can be said for each prayer, loving thought and communication sent our way.

It is comforting to know that there are literally thousands of caring individuals that are thinking and praying for Ashley. It makes facing this challenge possible.

In this week before Christmas our prayers will be with each of you that you will feel Christ’s loving peace.

Alright Ashley...you keep tracking those cats. Cats are much more fun to watch then a ball.."I think so". It won't be long before your having pureed cheese cake! I'm sure we could do that..maybe without the crust..but that's the fattening part anyway!
So glad to hear your making progress. Keep up the hard work sweetie!
Sending my love & prayers~Laura

Ashley:

I hope I did not sound too jumbled or incoherrent when I spoke to you on the phone. But I wish you the best of luck. You are in my prayers. Try to take one day at a time--as cliche as that sounds. Leave the worrying to your doctors and family members. At this point the world revolves around you and getting better!

Oh Ashley, I'm so excited to hear that you are swollowing applesauce and tracking images! That's great! I've been thinking about you all day and anxious to see your blog for last week and wk-end. I'm glad that Al was able to call, that is so encouraging. I bet there's a lot of snow up there. We got 6ins. in Elwood Sat. night. I hope to see you soon. I Love you bunches, Aunt Ann

Hi Ashley,
How great that Al called you. How inspiring his story must be. A neurologist, wow! I'm impressed, but don't you go getting any ideas about neurology. When you were 7, you promised Aunt Beth and me that you would become a plastic surgeon (okay, we forced you to make the promise), but we really could use a plastic surgeon in the family, after all, we are in our 30's now. Ha! We are preparing for our trip to Disney World and our visit to Grandma and Grandpa's. Can't wait to get out of the snow and onto the beach. Keep working hard. Can't wait to see you. Love, Aunt Lynn

Ashley-
"What it do, baby boo!" OK, I must admit, sometimes I slip in colloquial phrases, collegiate phrases, and completely insane slang phrases just so you can get a giggle out of hearing your parents read them to you. It's part of being an English major. We get twisted fun out of syntax, slang, and the like. :)

I am incredibly excited to hear you are tracking cats. The tracking is fabulous and all, of course, but CATS. I mean... come on, cats are fantastic! Ringo is nestled next to me as I'm typing this. I told him you were tracking cats, and he gave his approval. He's very excited for you as well! He said he met the cat who modeled for the image you followed. Ringo said Frank is kind of snooty, but, hey, that's what you get in showbiz.

And yes, that is what happens when your brain is loopy from school. And Christmas shopping. You make up stories about cats. :)

Also, I'm very excited to hear about another victor of ADEM. Good for him! And such inspiration for you! Oh dear, I'm using a lot of "!"s again... But I just get so darn excited about this! Woo!

Your improvements and milestones bring such joy to my heart. I'm so proud of you!

I Love You!
XoXo,
Emily

PS. I heard the Trans Siberian Orchestra on the radio, and thought of you! I'm mildly obsessed with catching that music because I'm going crazy with all of the "new" "poppy" Christmas songs. Ew. Give me that Orchestra any day!

My Dear Ashley,
I am so happy to hear of all of the milestones you are accomplishing! You must be working so hard! And I was thinking about this little tracking device thing I mean... black dots come on who honestly wants to follow a black dot. Cats possibly a tad better, but yet still not very exciting. Ya know they should put a large picture of Matthew McConnahay running on a beach across that screen and then the tracking would be worth while! Maybe another image could be him surfing across the screen. or swimming. Ok I'm done...HAHA! Maybe your mom could suggest that...Just an idea I thought you'd appreciate! It snowed in the Fort pretty bad last Saturday and guess who had to work Sunday...woohoo! We couldn't get my car out of the driveway due to the very fortunate event that our snowblower broke. I jokingly told my boss there is no way I can get there in this mess, if you need me to work that bad you come and get me. Guess what he DID! lol
I am so over winter weather, the snow for the first moments was pretty and everyone is thinking ohh look pretty snow. And then you go outside and freeze your tush off and then your thinking possibly a not nice word to describe the snow.
I have been at work already 5 times since break started so I'm sorry that all I have is boring work related stories! People are still out there practicing golf. I swear no one in their right mind could pay me to go practice my golf swing in 20 degree weather. No thank you! I also got to wrap presents at work and put paper into envelopes. Yes, my education is being put to good use at my job, I'm telling you Ash, the place couldn't funstion without my assistance. HAHA!
I am also so glad that you got to talk to Al, he sounded so inspiring. And the fact that he is now going into medical school, imagine how many patients he will be able to inspire with his story. The world needs more people like Al.
I love you so much Ashley. I tell you this all the time, but I think about you all the time. You are always in my thoughts and forever in my heart!
XOXO, HOlly

Hey Ashley and all of the Harringtons,
My family and I would just like all of you to know that you are in our prayers and that we will be thinking of your family at Christmas Eve mass tomorrow. Ash, I also have a couple of things here with your name on them, but I bet that your dad is already with you in Chicago. I will definitely bring them to him when he comes back into town. I love you to the moon and back! XOXO, Holly
