February 22nd

Ashley has remained consistent at eating well over the past couple of weeks. Liquids are still a challenge for her to swallow, but she is eating full servings of pureed foods each day. We see Ashley taking much more control of all her mouth muscles as she eats. She is even making more facial expressions. Of course we are prayerful that the progress she is making with eating will also lead to her rediscovery of voice. Ashley is quite pleased with her progress and we know she is continuing to work hard at it.

Lately we have increased the frequency at which we are getting Ashley on a gym mat in our family room during the week. For the most part we are letting her do her own thing. Ashley will roll from side to side and move her arms and legs in this unrestricted environment. We will help her up to her elbows as seen here to help her get a good stretch of her back and to put weight on her elbows. Ashley enjoys the freedom she has to move on her own so we will offer her the opportunity often.

Last night Ashley did some dancing, again. The husband of one of her therapists was playing at a local watering hole. Thanks to Fort Wayne’s total smoking ban we were able to visit, listen to music and of course dance without fighting off stale smoke smell. This marks Ashley’s first nightclub experience and, thanks to more establishments being accessible along with our ability to transport her, Ashley is doing more and building on her self confidence.

She needed balance support, but Ashley initiated and competed every step on the short walk from our table to the dance floor. As you can imagine she was beaming that famous smile of hers the whole time.

As we approach 20 months since Ashley was stricken with this debilitating, one time, demyelinating event we are thankful for all the strides she continues to make. Anytime we lament the slow progress Ashley manages to shows us something new. At times we think she is not only carrying the burden of her condition, but is also shouldering the responsibility of helping us keep a positive attitude as well. Praise God He is listening to all of your prayers!

Hitting the nightclubs huh? How fun for you (and I'm sure mom and dad enjoyed it too! We're so glad to hear you are eating real food now. Do you get to choose what you want? Have they treated you to your favorite flavored coffee yet?
We are just biding our time thru winter, waiting to head south over spring break.
Keep up your great work and positive attitude. You're the best Ashley!
We love you all! Aunt Lynn

Hey, sweetie!

Ah, you got to go dancing? I'm so jealous! My roommate and I rarely get out, but you know how much I love dancing! There aren't any good places in West Lafayette for that! Boo!

I cannot wait until Spring Break. I hope you'll find time in your busy schedule to see me; I miss you so much! My aunt Jane is getting married March 6, so I'll be home that weekend, but that will be rushed! The following weekend, starting March 14, I'll be home for a week for my Spring Break! Of course, this will be absolutely nothing compared to our Mexico trip... in fact, it is the antithesis of our Mexican voyage because I have to job search... what a downer... tee-hee!

Keep up the amazing work; you are doing so well! You're always in my thoughts and prayers, Ashley!

I love you!

XoXo,

Emily*

Ashley Harrington.... gets my Number one vote for "Dancing With the Stars"
All you need now is one of those beautiful sparkly costumes and a good looking Latin Hunk to partner up with you!!! How's that sound Ash??? Not bad huh???
We are thrilled that you have been making so many strides in your recovery! It must feel so good to stretch out on the mat at home! You have your own little yoga class going on right in your own family room!!! All you need now is some nice peaceful music and the sound of a water fall in the background! We are so proud of all of your accomplishments, and know that you work harder than any person we know! The therapists must all love you, how could they not! What makes you so very special Ashley is that your beauty shines from the inside out! You are absolutely AMAZING!!! I just finished giving ISTEPS today and boy are the kids glad to get that over with! Wow!!! Talk about a difficult test!!! I may not be "SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER" after all!! ha ha Those math questions were enough to blow anyone away!!! Who makes up these tests anyway???? Probably someone who never works with kids!!! ha ha Holly has been working her behind off at school this semester, lots and lots of papers and projects lately. She is working at three different schools this semester and continues taking 18 hours of classes! Thank goodness she has always been a time manager!! She is leaving for Florida on Monday to spend the week with family, and is looking forward to the change of scenery!! Lauren will be performing at Bishop Luers this Sat! The kids came in 2nd place two weekends in a row!! hey have a really good show this year, and are enjoying the fruits of their labor!! Lots of big trophies!! Hey... if you and your mom and dad need some entertainment on Sat we perform on stage at 2:30! The competition starts at 8:00am and awards are at 11:30pm Its a very long day!!! But hey!! Lauren loves it, and has made so many wonderful friends from so many different choirs!!! Purdue recently contacted her about trying out for the PURDUETTES, their singing group so she may even continue the fun in college!! We love you Miss Ashley, and continue keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!! Holly has a big picture of the two of you smiling in her room so you are thought of daily!
Love to the family!! xoxoxoxo
