Beginning last week Ashley has been having corrective casts placed on both of her feet. A week ago Tuesday she had her first casting which stayed on until Friday of last week. Those came off, more adjustments were made, and two new casts went on that same day. Those in turn came off this last Tuesday. They were so pleased with the progress that the current casts are going to stay on until next Tuesday.
Believe it or not the casts do not bother Ashley much. She really did not express having any irritation until this last set. With those it was just with the first time she put weight on them standing up. Even then after a little while they were comfortable. She has had no problem sleeping in them.
Here you see the finishing touches being put on one of the casts. It takes about 2 hours to do them both since they have to take several measurements and then decide on the adjustments and make sure those adjustments are maintained throughout the casting process. Like everything else they do at therapy they are doing this to perfection.

We expect Ashley to go through this process for another couple of weeks. At the end of that her feet should be back to normal posture and it will be easier for Ashley to walk. Up until now Ashley has been more slouched when standing because of changes created by the affects of tone in her legs, ankles and feet. We are anxious to see the improvements this procudure will make. The weather continues to improve and we can't wait to take a really walk outside.
For now, with both legs in casts, it looks like we allowed her to walk down the steps solo.
We are happy to report that Ashley is continuing to eat quite well. We are working on the liquids and are confident that it won't be long until Ashley will be getting all her nutrition and hydration orally verses via the feeding tube.
With great strides on the Walk and Eat areas of the Walk-Eat-Talk focus we are picking up the pace on Ashley's talking exercises. When she is laying down and does not have gravity pushing down on her diaphragm she is very verbal. It still takes her a bit of effort to get her diaphragm going when she is sitting or standing, but she continues to work at it. We don't have pronunciation yet but we know it is coming.
What we do know is that Ashley is continuing her slow but steady progression. Each day our confidence builds that Ashley will have a remarkable recovery.
Thanks to all for you for your continued prayers and support.

Hi Ashley,
Love the boots! What great progress you are making with eating and vocalizing. You look so good in all the pictures your Dad posts. Grandma and Grandpa are heading home tomorrow. We'll open up their house for them and see them on Saturday. They are especially excited to get home and see all of you. It won't be long now and we'll be seeing you at the Lake. Love, Aunt Lynn
Ash!
I saw that one pic of you holding your head up and I thought it was one of those pictures of you when you were about 18 and they caught you reading or something. I think those purple casts look SOOO COOL!! I want some in light blue!
So how are you lately? Doing good, judging by the pictures. How's Austin? Is he doing good in school? Tell Aunt Mary that I hope she's doing good. Also tell your Dad and Mom that I love them. Austin too.
Love,
Angie :)

Hi Ashley-
As always you continue to inspire. You look gorgeous in your new pictures. I was just thinking that it's like you are in training for your own personal Olympics and whatever you accomplish is GOLD. You are a true winner in everyones eyes.
Take care- you continue to be in my prayers.
Melissa (Aunt Lynn's friend)
Dear Harringtons,
I so enjoy reading your blog. It makes me smile inside to know that I had Ashley pegged as a special girl way back in the fifth grade. She continues to prove me right. I am so proud of her and the whole family for your perseverence and positive attitude.
God bless,
E.Martin
Ashley, Lookin good as always!! I am in the process of trying to reschedule our trip to Mexico. Who would have guessed anything this big would have happened? It's hard to do because of the kids schedule. Oh well, when given lemons make lemonade, or in our case I may have to learn how to make margaritas!!!! Just waiting for the weather to improve. I haven't been outside to walk for quite awhile now. Can't wait to see everyone at the lake. Love Aunt Beth and crew
Just wanted you guys to know that we're so happy about the cruise and all the progress.
Slowly, but surely...
That's our motto at home with George.
My family always includes you and your whole family on our DAILY prayers..
With Love,

Ash--
Hey! I love purple, I think you made the right choice! I am definitely purpled out: several purple dresses, purple heels, purple/black/white room, it's ridiculous. Yay purple!
It sounds like you're kicking butt, as always. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond (you might notice my date-posted is a wee bit behind everyone else's). I have reasons, though!
First off... my computer got a terrible virus. Second, it was Dead Week and Final's Week. Virus + Busiest time of the semester = crazy Emily.
I was in a foul mood but I am now much calmer. I'm done with school for the year. Wow, three years have gone by... I'm a senior now! Eek!
I also got a job baby-sitting little Quincy (14 months). I baby-sat her during the spring semester and I'll baby-sit her during the summer, and continue in the Fall. Unfortunately, that means I won't be home as much this summer and that means I won't get to see you as much.
However, I will try my hardest to see you when I do come home. Once I take my LSAT (major EEK!), I can come home much more often!
I can't wait to see you. Please keep up the amazing work and keep smiling that beautiful smile. It makes me so happy to see you working so hard but keeping such a positive attitude. Every day takes you a little further in your progress. And anytime you feel frustrated, just remember what Dori says... Keep on swimming, keep on swimming... :)
I love you, Ashley Marie! TALK! Walk! Eat! (out of order for emphasis!)
XoXo,
Emily*
Dear Harrington Family,
Was super to see you!
Have a good Holiday.
