April 6th

What a change in weather for us. We woke up to snow this morning. Yesterday we got back from a Caribbean cruise. We earned a trip through my job and were fortunate enough to work with a travel agent that specialized in wheelchair accessible itineraries. Originally we settled on a hotel in Puerto Rico that had wheelchair access right up to the beach. We did stay there the night before our cruise and it was perfect. The photo below is the beach at that hotel. It was a bit breezy that morning, but Ashley enjoyed getting her feet in the ocean, the first of several times.

In the end we took the travel agent’s advice and booked a Royal Caribbean cruise out of San Juan. We had a wheelchair accessible cabin that provided us with plenty of room. All the public areas of the ship called the Serenade of the Seas were accessible.

One highpoint for us was that they prepared each evening’s meal for Ashley so she could dine with us and eat what she wanted. The food was great and while the rest of us have pledged to drop the weight we gained Ashley ate better than ever. Although we only went to the main dining room for dinner Ashley ate pureed foods for every meal. She did so well we are going to adopt the strategy of preparing full meals three times a day for Ashley from now on.

We took Ashley’s collapsible wheelchair so we could get out and about on the different islands. We assumed we would have to get help carrying Ashley to a beach lounge chair, but to our delightful surprise we were able to pull Ashley backward in that chair across the sand. As such we visited beaches on...

St. Thomas (Megan’s Bay)

St. Maarten (Great Bay on the Dutch side)

Antigua (Dickenson Bay)

Barbados (Malibu Beach).
We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather every day. We did a pretty good job of managing our sun exposure so no one had a painful sunburn.
As we cruised along the west coast of St. Lucia we saw the Pitons at sunset.

The staff on the ship was very accommodating and we met so many friendly and helpful people both on the ship and on the islands.
On deck prior to formal night dinner.

Kicking back on deck.

I have to say I am so jealous!!! I went on a cruise senior year with Royal Caribbean! It was so much fun, but we were on a different ship :(
As a family we have vacationed in St. Maarten, and you must have been right by where we stayed because we were on the Dutch Side on Great Bay!!!
That is so awesome you were able to eat at the dinners because they are amazing, and everyone is so nice!!
Glad you had a great time!

Ashley--

Omgosh, how jealous am I? That is so spectacular, sweetheart. I am so happy for you and your family. I am completely speechless with happiness for your family. Here I thought Austin was lucky enough to go on a cruise with some friends, but no-- your entire family!
"Awesome" is what keeps repeating in my mind over and over again! Yay!

In my COM class (interpersonal communication, so it's not just about speech!), we talk about how men and women relate, men and men, and women and women, and one part was about "closeness"-- how close people are, physically and relationship...ly. One of the examples in class reminded me of you and I on our last day in Mexico and we held hands. I can't wait to be home and hold your hand again! I am going to try my hardest to see you over Easter weekend!

I am so proud of you and your amazing accomplishments. You are such a strong, wonderful woman, Ashley. Keep up the spectacular work! I miss you so much!

I love you, Miss Ashley!

XoXo,

Emily*

You continue to inspire all of us! Looks like we may be seeing you at some of the senior activites coming shortly, Hard to believe Austin and Lauren will be graduating!! Ashley, loved the pics from the trip. Can't wait to see more. I took Jess on college visit last weekend. We went to Purdue and IU. She did a sleepover at IU through their host program. She had a great time. I walked around the campus and it is really cool. It rained the first day but was decent the next day. At this point she is leaning toward Purdue. I like the fact that Purdue is close. On Saturday she went to Purdue and stayed the night with a friend so she was able to check everything out. Alex has been working and going to school. He really likes the classes he is taking and at this point has been scoring the highest in the heating and air classes. I'm hoping it stops raining and warms up a bit so I can go for a walk-not looking to good. Oh well there is a bag of M&M with my name on it. Hope to hook up soon. Love Cassidys
