While visiting in Virginia Ashley was stricken with a brain injury. Her symptoms did not point to a conclusive diagnosis. Within a week the concensus was acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by damage to the myelin sheath. Myelin insulates the neurofibers that carry signals throughout the brain. Myelin can regrow, but the amount and time varies in each case.

Ash--
Wow! You seem to be keeping so busy! I hope you had fun at the TinCaps game. I wanted to go to that one, but Z told me it sold out due to the award presented that night. I choose to believe it was because you went and everyone wanted to see you! :) I know I sure do!
Hooray for Victory Junction! I'm excited for you and your family! I hope you have another amazing time there. I remember last year what a positive experience it was for your family and also what a positive impact you left at the camp. You touch everyone, Ashley. You're incredibly special and amazing and an inspiration to all.
I'm sorry for being so tardy with writing. Between our lake vacation (remember when you came up? PUPPY CHOW!) and moving into a new apartment, I was very busy for two solid weeks. Now I've been home in Fort Wayne for the first (and last) time for an entire week and I have yet to have a "down" day. Everything is go-go-go, but you know all about that, Ms. Social Butterfly!
I'm sorry I missed seeing you this time around (I did see you at mass, though! With Seminarian Irish and his speech!), but I plan on seeing you soon. Hopefully your schedule can permit a visit. I miss you tons.
Keep up all of your amazing work. I know this trip will be so good for you and for your parents. Show them all of your fantastic improvements since last year. Look how far you've come!
I love you, Miss Ashley.
XoXo,
Emily*
