August 31st

It seems like it has been nonstop action since we got back from Victory Junction Gang Camp two weeks ago. We have enjoyed sharing our experience with many family and friends. It was such an inspiring experience for all of us.

First things first we want to share some more photos from Victory Junction…

Hello Kazu!

Ashley met two other people at Victory Junction with ADEM. Chris and Kate are the first people Ashley has met in person that can relate first hand to what Ashley is facing. While every case of ADEM is different, since the specific areas of the brain that suffer demyelization correspond to the outward affects of the condition, Ashley was able to relate with both of them and it was a tremendous boost to her already positive attitude.

We had a wonderful opportunity to meet with the doctors that specialize in these myelin related auto-immune conditions. We received both encouragement and guidance from each of them. As Ashley continues to work to get her speech back she will be focused on three sounds, “la-la-la, ma-ma-ma and ga-ga-ga”. Now thing about what was physically unique about each of those sounds. Times up! La-la-la involves the tongue (Ashley does a great job in positioning her tongue for that ‘L’ sound). Ma-ma-ma gets your whole mouth moving and ga-ga-ga gets your throat into the act. We were also told that Ashley maybe able to sing a familiar song before she can talk. I remember that George from Miami recovered his voice this way. He initially could sing, but following the song could not talk. Eventually he got his speech back as well. Poor Ashley having to listen to mom and dad sing off key.

This photo was taken in the hotel we stopped at half way home from Victory Junction. Since we did not have our standing frame Ashley improvised. Notice that Ashley is holding the back of her wheel chair for support. Also notice that there is no one else in the picture. Ashley stood for several minutes before requesting to sit down. All the while we never had to assist her for balance.
No sooner did Ashley get home and several of her friends organized a shopping trip at the mall. Although mom has good taste we know Ashley appreciated having her peers pick out some clothes for her.
Ashley had a visit as well from Kelly on her way back to Notre Dame for the start of her senior year. Of course we will certainly be planning a visit this fall to St. Mary’s and Notre Dame to see Ashley’s classmates and other friends.

Austin started classes today at IU. We all went down last Wednesday to complete his move from the hotel he was staying at with the football team (Austin has a work-study job as a videographer with the team) to his dorm. Ashley was kind enough to loan Austin some of her college supplies and dorm appropriate appliances. We look forward to coming back down for a football game in a couple of weeks.

Since this was a mild summer in Fort Wayne we are hoping for a warm fall so we can continue to get out and enjoy a variety of activities before the cold weather is back.

OMG !!! What beautiful pictures..I love the mall picture, too. Ashley looks so pretty and excited:):) As I was reading the blog, and you mentioned the singing part, I was saying to myself "OH THAT'S HOW GEORGE STARTED TALKING !" Then I continued to read, and there it was...George's name...I didn't know that you guys knew about the singing...

You know which song worked? (don't think we're nerds, please) "I Think I Love You" by The Partridge Family..:):)

We sang it over and over again until he couldn't take it anymore. :D

Talking was the last thing George did, and OH what a wonderful day that was...My prayers and positive thoughts are sent your way for continued and constant progress !!!

I know you'll be talking soon...I just know it...

Dear Ashley,
Wow! What fun you have been having. First of all, I like Anna's suggestion of singing "I think I Love You" I remember all the words and I'm sure Aunt Beth does too. I also recall that Kelley (a young woman from out East with ADEM who I've been following) sang too. We'll be getting the song books together. Grandma is going to love this!
I'm so happy for you meeting those wonderful people at Victory Junction. What a blessing that place and all those people are. We love you Ashley and as always you are in our prayers. Aunt Lynn, Uncle Stan and Angela

Hey sister lady..This is obviously my first time commenting on the blog but I thought now would be the most opportune time because I just wrapped up my first day of class at college and more importantly it's less than one hour away from your birthday month!!!! Yayyy!!

So my monday classes will definately be a pain but I will learn lots, I can tell already. I was so excited to get that card from you today; it was so cool. By the way, feel free to send gifts like that to me anytime.. ;) ;)

But as for me, I am headed for bed because mother would be upset if I did not get my full 8 hours of sleep though I will get about 11 tonight. I love you soooo much Ashley Marie Angela!!! I'll see ya soon...xoxoxoxo

Love,
Little Big Brother Austin Miles

Harringtons, you have been really on the go. What fun adventures! Ashley, you look terrific! I am glad the girls took you shopping. That must have been a wild outing with so many friends surrounding you. I could feel all of the positive vibes heading your way even through the picture.
I can't believe Austin is in college! It seems such a short time since the two of you were roaming the halls at St. V's.
My prayers are with all of you. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to the resst of us!
God bless,
E.Martin

Hi Harringtons,
It turned out to be a pretty good holiday weekend - weather-wise for Indiana :)
These pics are all super! This trip looks even better than last one.
Birthday Month! I love that. Ruth and Craig do that.-- Even for Craig, he's the biggest kid of all. Rachel is going to be 16 in a week!
We love you.
Oh, ps, Tell Aunt Beth "Hi" for me:)
