Ashley is off to a great start this year.
The biggest advance is that Ashley fed herself. She picked up a large pretzel stick and she was able to get it to her mouth, take a bite and eat it. While it is not a seamless flow, it takes her awhile to get the pretzel to her mouth, it is a significant milestone. For the first time in over 30 months Ashley has given herself something to eat. She has also added graham crackers to her practice.
In therapy Ashley walked (with support, but without any patterning) around the entire Lutheran Hospital outpatient rehabilitation main room last week. That’s about 200 feet.
While we are still waiting on those first words Ashley is mouthing individual letters of a given word. It gives us a chill of joy up our spines to realize that she is closing in on regaining the complicated mechanics of what we pray will be her restored voice.
Pool therapy is back twice a week. The buoyancy allows Ashley to walk more fluidly. She also rolls from her back to her stomach with relative ease. She moves her legs to the therapist’s request more frequently and to a greater range. The pool time is a definite plus. One thing the physical therapist noticed was that Ashley was more vocal in the pool. They shared that with speech therapy so her speech therapist came to the pool (this is in a separate facility) to see what Ashley was doing to possibly augment her speech rehab.
Ashley is improving her practice with drinking liquids with a straw. While Ashley very rarely has a problem with choking when it comes to food (pureed, or something she is chewing) liquids are still a challenge. She will master this with time as well.

We traveled down to Elwood, IN for a post holiday Slater side of the family get together a few weeks ago. Ashley’s cousin Lara and her husband Daniel were our hosts. It was wonderful to visit with the extended family. Ashley’s progress was on display. She walked into the house (with support) and enjoyed visiting with everyone.
We continue to witness the miracle of Ashley’s healing that is a direct result of all the ongoing pray support that we are so fortunate to receive. We cannot fathom how anyone could confront the challenges Ashley faces while maintaining such a positive focus and optimism without strong faith. Ashley is unwavering in her faith. She will not begin a meal until grace is said. She takes on an aura of peace at night following evening prayers at bedtime. Although Ashley cannot speak aloud yet she most certainly has an open line of communication with God. He has plans for Ashley and we have seen first hand how she has such a powerful, positive impact on so many people that have crossed her path.
Ashley’s friend Emily coined the phrase Walk, Talk & Eat. We are praying that 2010 is the year when ‘talk’ joins ‘walk’ and ‘eat’ in Ashley’s rehabilitation. We appreciate your prayers for words to flow from Ashley again.

Jeff, Mary and Ashley,
WOW - we are thrilled to read about Ashley's newest achievements . . . we pray that 2010 will be the year of Walk, Talk and Eat!
Keep up all that hard work, Ashley - it sure seems to be paying off!

Ashley,
It was so wonderful to see you at the holiday gathering hosted by Lara and Daniel. Not seeing you as often as I would like, I'm always amazed and gratified to witness your marked progress in so many areas since the last time I saw you. And of course, you are always our radiant Ashley Marie. Walk, Talk and Eat is my mantra.
Your loving Uncle, Ed
Ashley, what can I say? You are an inspiration to all of us! Hope to see you soon. Love Uncle Craig, Aunt Beth, Alex and Jess
Hey, Ash!
Sounds like you've been keeping pretty busy-- but that doesn't surprise me! Nothing can keep you down. Your accomplishments are so amazing.
Austin announced on Facebook that you took your first bite since 2007-- It was one of the very few times I thought Facebook did something useful! I was so excited. I clapped and "yay"ed everywhere. And, of course, said a quick "thank you" to God.
Nothing accomplished is "too small" or "insignificant." Everything you do is so important, right down to the very breaths you take! A pretzel rod might as well be a three course meal, it made me so excited! It absolutely thrilled me to find out you fed yourself!
I'm happy to hear you're back in the pool. And with the added benefits of being more vocal in there! Maybe because the pressure/gravity isn't the same? Hm. We'll leave that up to the doctors, Emily. Let's not try science. It's dangerous for me.
As for law school, I haven't heard back from everyone yet. The suspense is driving me crazy. But I know God will put me where I need to be. However, if He and I could just agree on where that is, that would be wonderful. Ahem, God, AHEM.
Speaking of God, I pray for you every day. As always, it ends with WALK! TALK! EAT! You're doing so well in all areas, and it sounds like you'll be making words (or singing!) pretty soon! I cannot wait to hear you!
I love you, Ashley Marie. I'm not sure what my schedule will be this semester (it's turning out to be a lot busier than expected), but hopefully we can meet up soon.
GOD BLESS!
XoXo,
Emily
PS. And as always, keep up the amazing work!
Hey Ashley!
Walk, Talk, and Eat! Let's go for it, girl! Ashley your strength, courage, and determination have always been inspiring to me. You constantly remind me that if you have faith and work hard for something anything is possible. I love you so much! I am officially down to 14 days of student teaching placement one, and boy do I have some excellent stories! I will have to share them with you soon! My teacher that I am working with is amazing, and scaringly I feel like she was my twin from somewhere else. We finish each other's sentences...it's weird haha! Last week we sang an onomatopoeia song for our students which was quite enjoyable. I am currently sampling cold number two. My goal is to escape placement one without getting the flu! My second placement will be with special education, so I am really looking forward to that. I hope you are putting on your very best let's go colts face today. I am hoping to get all of my work done so I can watch the colts dominate! Love you soooo much!
XOXOXO, HOlly
Hi Ashley, and your folks and A.M., too:)
Think of you all with love and prayers.
Go Colts!

Oh, I like this one: 'Peace isn't the absence of trouble; it's the Presence of God.'
Oh. My. COW!! I am so proud! I can't wait to hear her talk. I bet it'll happen really soon! I hope her first words are "Hi Mom, Hi Dad!" Maybe even, "Where's Angela?" Wink wink. ;) Just kidding, although that would be really nice. :P I have started cheerleading at recess with my friends. We look like this: *\o/*. :P Keep it up Ash, and happy Valentines Day! Give my love to MILES! Love you all!
Oh yeah, did you hear that the Colts LOST THE SUPER BOWL??!!!!! That interception just screwed up the whole game, and Manning stunk in the 4th quarter. Stunk? Stank? Stinked? Past tense of stink, whatever. I got A Honor Roll! Keep it up!
Ashley!
Wow! I'm so glad to hear about you, I admit that I have not been keeping in touch as much as I should, sorry!! Life is going good over here, crazy buzy with lots of extra classes this semester, but I'm looking forward to going to Rome for the week this Friday! It'll be really nice to have a break and get out of Nancy for a bit!
I am so proud of all the accomplishments that you have made - it is truly incredible how you have kept pushing through this and I know you will make lots of strides in this year, as well.
Know that I love you lots and can't wait to catch up when I get home - around July, I think!
Love and hugs from across the ocean!

Dearest friend Ashley,
Ok so I noticed our beloved Erika posted in front of me, and I am just going to warn you that my life is not going to be near as exciting as Erika's! haha! The farthest I have ventured in the past months have been to Southwest Fort Fun...wait scratch that I did go to the beautiful bustling city of New Haven. haha! Well...after getting rid of cold number two I've moved on to cold number 3! haha! One of these days when I am actually healthy for more than a two day spand I'm coming over! hah! Anyways, my first student teaching placement will be coming to an end on Friday! I cannot believe how fast time is flying. I will miss my teacher and all of my second graders like crazy! My teacher and I became really close...we text each other and go out to eat together. She is an amazing mentor and friend. My second graders don;t know Im leaving yet. I have to tell them Wednesday. I had a little girl call me mommy last week, and a little boy tell me he loved me! haha! Kids always make you feel awesome! Then, I have seven short weeks at my special education placement and I'm officially done. Whew! I hope you are continuing to dominate in therapy. I was so impressed with how well you were standing last time I saw you! You have made so much progress Ashley.I am so proud of you, and so lucky to have a friend like you in my life. I love you so much and can't wait to see you soon! XOXOXO
Love, Holly
Dear Ashley,
Happy March! Well I am officially done with my first student teaching placement. I balled my eyes out on Friday as I said goodbye to all of my little precious second graders, and so did my teacher! haha! They all wrote me beautiful letters and one by one they stood up and read them to me. So then, of course, I cried again! haha! It was a hard goodbye for sure. On Monday, I already begin my next placement with special education students and then I'm done. I feel like the first placement flew by. I will have to bring over the scrapbook I made so I can show you. I hope you are still dominating in therapy. You truly have made so much progress already. Love all of the Harringtons! Talk to you soon!
XOXOXO, Holly
